This position in the Center of Disabilities and Development will assess the educational and behavioral problems of children and recommend appropriate placement and programming. They will also administer and interpret individualized psycho‑educational evaluations with school‑age individuals (ages 5‑21). Position is available for 50‑100% effort. Responsibilities Examine and evaluate children with educational and behavioral problems. Conduct psycho‑educational testing using standardized instruments, such as Weschler Individual Achievement Test 4, Gray Oral Reading Tests‑Fifth Edition, Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing 2. Review documentation from parents and school teams. Interpret results of psycho‑educational testing in relation to student’s educational placement and diagnose learning disorders. Provide written documentation to the parent which includes psycho‑educational testing results, diagnoses, recommendations for home, and suggestions regarding evidence‑based/best practices for school. Provide input and suggestions to parents and school teams regarding student’s academic strengths and weaknesses based on psycho‑educational testing. Refer individuals for further evaluation with clinicians from other disciplines, as needed. Provide ongoing communication with parents, school teams, and community providers regarding student’s educational needs. Attend in‑service trainings and professional conferences to remain aware of current developments in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of students with learning disorders. Recommend appropriate placement for children with educational and behavioral problems. Refer children for further psychological treatment when applicable. Serve as liaison between hospital and public education institutions for maladjusted students. Prepare students for re‑entry into public school setting. Provide advice and counsel to classroom teachers. Maintain records of progress on each student after his/her re‑entry into public school. Assist in the training of interns in Special Education and para‑education. Interpret problems of the maladjusted student to public educational institutions, other community agencies and parents. Participate as a team member with teachers, parents, psychologists and counselors of students. Coordinate and facilitate communications between parents, public schools and hospital staff. Conduct training sessions for public school personnel and parents in techniques useful in dealing with behavior disorders, physically handicapped or academically maladjusted children. Attend in‑service training programs to remain aware of latest developments in the treatment of children with educational or behavioral problems. Conduct research and publish results. Maintain effective working relationships with other assessment personnel such as clinical psychologists, speech‑language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, social workers, pediatric medical providers, and community providers. Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public. Required Qualifications A Master’s degree in Special Education or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Valid certification, approval or endorsement by the State of Iowa is required. Special Education Approval (Instructional Strategist II BD/LD) is required. Reasonable (1‑3 years) teaching experience in Special Education, with graduate coursework in educational assessment. Level B test qualifications are required. Reasonable (1‑3 years) experience in a K‑12 school setting as a special education teacher or school psychologist is required for educators serving outpatients in the Child Psychiatry Clinic. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Desired Qualifications Knowledge of community‑based disability services. Experience working in a healthcare environment and as a member of a multi‑disciplinary team. Experience working with electronic medical records. Knowledge of University of Iowa policies and procedures.
