Senior Flight Controls Engineer

Location: Long Beach, CA

Overview We are seeking a Senior Flight Controls Engineer to help shape the behavior of next-generation unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), from concept to flight. In this role, you’ll design and validate the algorithms that keep our aircraft stable, precise, and agile. This is a hands-on position where your work directly impacts how our vehicles perform in the real world.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and tune flight control laws for large UAV platforms.
• Develop and refine autopilot, guidance, and navigation algorithms.
• Build and enhance system-level simulation models for design and testing.
• Work closely with aerodynamics, electrical, and mechanical teams to integrate solutions.
• Plan and execute MIL/SIL/HIL simulations, ground tests, and flight tests.
• Create test procedures and analyze flight data to verify performance.
• Collaborate with the flight test team to ensure safe, efficient test campaigns.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s or Ph.D. in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
• 3+ years of experience in flight control system development.
• Strong knowledge of flight dynamics and control theory.
• Experience with modern flight control architectures and Fly-by-Wire (FBW) systems.
• Familiarity with guidance, navigation, and state estimation algorithms.
• Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, Python, and embedded real-time control.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with flight computer hardware.
• Familiarity with aircraft system identification tools and optimization methods.
• Background in VTOL aircraft.
• Previous experience certifying UAV or manned aircraft flight control systems.
• Understanding of safety-critical systems and redundancy management.
• Knowledge of actuator dynamics and sensor fusion.
• Hands-on HIL/SIL testing, flight test, and data analysis experience.
• RC, remote, or crewed pilot experience is a plus.
