JOB TITLE: Laboratory Environmental Health and Safety Specialist

REPORTS TO: Director of Safety

STATUS: Full time, non-exempt

LOCATION: Bellingham, WA (onsite)

SALARY RANGE: $80,000-$90,000/year based on experience and interview outcome

JOB SUMMARY :

The Laboratory Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will work closely with the Director of Safety and the Laboratory Technical Director to ensure safe working environments and compliance across all company sites. The incumbent will have a strong understanding of state and federal safety regulations, and have some experience with EPA pesticide practices. Prior knowledge of laboratory safety, handling, and storage practices is required. This role will require auditing and maintaining current safety and storage processes across all company locations and ensure continued success for growth.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

• Responsible for chemical hygiene plan related documentation, training, compliance, and reviews.
• Responsible for hazard communication training and compliance.
• Responsible for hazardous waste handling protocol compliance and disposal.
• Responsible for chemical inventory management and TSCA compliance.
• Responsible for OSHA safety and exposure compliance.
• Responsible for EPA regulated pesticide inventory and handling compliance.
• Responsible for performing and reviewing hazard assessments in Tidal Vision laboratories.
• Responsible for ensuring proper operation for safety related engineering controls such as fume hoods, eye wash stations, and monitoring equipment in Tidal Vision facilities.
• Responsible for coordinating overall laboratory hygiene and laundry services.
• Responsible for documentation and training related to laboratory emergency action plans, spill response protocols, PPE programs, and other related programs.
• Responsible for conducting regularly scheduled safety trainings, retraining's, and audits for the laboratories.
• Responsibilities will involve coordinating with other Tidal Vision laboratories to standardize safety programs, protocols, and documentation.
• Field chemical safety and storage questions from operations team in Bellingham, and provide guidance as appropriate.
• Support our current safety culture, and help drive continuous improvement.
• Active participation in Tidal Vision Safety Crew meetings.
• Travel for incident response required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree or better in chemistry, chemical engineering, industrial hygiene, environmental science, process engineering, occupational health and safety, or a related field. Years of experience will be considered in place of a degree and in conjunction.
• Safety certifications such as Associate Safety Professional, (ASP), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST), HAZWOPER, RCRA, or similar.
• 1+ years experience with digital inventory management systems, and digital EHS tools and systems
• 3+ years Experience with coordinating incidents and spill response, incident investigations and root cause analysis
• 3+ years experience of hands-on laboratory chemical safety, laboratory EHS, and/or chemical processing safety.
• Professional experience developing and implementing safety programs for laboratory environments.
• Professional knowledge of OSHA laboratory standards, chemical hygiene, and laboratory safety regulations.
• 3+ years experience with chemical exposure monitoring practices and systems and developing laboratory safety programs.
• 3+ years experience with hazard communication standards and hazardous waste management and disposal practices.
• 3+ years experience with chemical inventory management.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Safety certifications such as Associate Safety Professional, (ASP), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST), HAZWOPER, RCRA, or similar.
• Certified industrial hygienists, or similar certifications, may be given special consideration.
• Experience with digital inventory management systems, and digital EHS tools and systems

Licensing & Special Requirements

• Incumbent is subject to a criminal background check.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The working environment will be primarily on-site in a laboratory and chemical processing facility with a hybrid schedule as allowed. Must be able to follow all safety procedures and wear proper PPE all at times. Incumbent must be able to stand, bend, walk, move, kneel, reach over head, and have the ability to sit and stand for long periods of time. Travel for incident response will be required at times. Travel to other sites as needed.
