Job Description
The Lead Registered Radiation Therapist provides leadership, training, and guidance to all registered radiation therapists, supports leadership, and performs complex and specialized radiation oncology work specific to the oncology department.
Under leadership guidance, the Lead may develop training and provide orientation for new registered radiation therapists and/or students, review and propose updates to procedure manuals and protocols, integrate new technical procedures, and coordinate group projects. The Lead assists in identifying problems, recommending solutions, and assisting in the improvement of technical and patient service programs/classes. Registered Radiation Therapists at this level are expected to have a thorough understanding and proficiency in the procedures performed in the Radiation Oncology Department.
The Lead performs and trains lower-level staff on the performance of routine, complex, and specialized work as well as assists in the implementation of new technology. Complex patient procedures include stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS); stereotactic radiotherapy (SBRT); advanced use of the ARIA Radiation Oncology software, Surface-guided imaging, and complex tumor localization and tracking procedures. The Lead provides patient care within a broad range of healthcare needs and is responsible for patient scheduling, overseeing simulation procedures, anticipating changes in field boosts, and recognizing dose limitations. The Lead has significant responsibility for the efficient operation of the treatment delivery work area, communicating and coordinating daily operations with medical staff and residents, nurses, physics and dosimetry, front desk, and ancillary services such as social work and dietary.
As a Registered Radiation Therapist, the Lead will provide daily care of cancer patients, including accurate interpretation and delivery of radiation treatments, in accordance with the prescription and instruction of the radiation oncologist. The Lead performs simulations and provides clinical instruction for radiation therapy students. In addition, the Lead will be required during Brachytherapy procedures, on-call, and treatment scheduling. The Lead must be able to assist in treatment planning procedures including tumor localization and dosimetry; triage sick patients to nursing for evaluation; and perform daily quality assurance protocols. The Lead may be required to work mandatory overtime and shift work.
Responsibilities and Duties (in addition to Radiation Therapist Duties):
Performs simulation procedures for initial patient set-ups and demonstrates essential skills of treatment modalities and protocols to accurately set up and administer radiation treatments.
Responsible for the operational functions of Radiation Therapy including simulations and treatments, proper functioning of linear accelerators, simulators, and Computed Tomography machines.
Oversees and assists team members in assigned functional areas, which may include but are not limited to, ensuring the team is meeting key deliverables and quality standards, addressing and resolving challenges, and managing and tracking performance; escalates issues to senior leaders as needed.
Communicates effectively with patients, families, medical staff, healthcare team members, supervisors, and outside contacts.
Is the main point of contact for all schools involving precepting students.
Creates, manages, and communicates the schedule including PTO, approving travelers' weekly time, and machine assignments. Verify coverage on machines on all shifts.
May perform additional duties as assigned.
Education
Completion of an accredited program in Radiation Therapy is required
Experience
(4) years of experience as a Radiation Therapist is required
Certification & Licensure
Registration through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is required
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart 'Healthcare Provider' (HCP) - AHA approved is required. *New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification before completion of orientation.
Qualifications
Analytical ability to set up equipment properly, position and align patients and equipment to very close tolerances and recreate such positions daily.
Interpersonal skills necessary to explain therapy and treatment programs to patients to allay apprehensions and elicit their cooperation required.
Strong skills to effectively communicate with physicians, staff, and physicists is required.
Ability to communicate with and provide care for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients required.
The ability to run simulation alone is required.
Lead HDR required
Ability to lead stereotactic procedures required.
Ability to precept students upon completion of preceptor class is required.
Ability to train new staff in simulation is required.
Ability to train new staff on machines is required.
Machine warm-up is required.
Ability to teach patient education class, if offered.
