Job Description

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It's why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It's why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it's why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it's worth paying for.

Job Description

The New York Times is seeking a lead writer for a newsletter focused on international news, with original explanatory journalism and curated Times coverage from around the world, working closely with other Times newsletters like The Morning.

The ideal candidate will lead and manage a talented international team and serve as the host of the newsletter. They will have reporting experience on at least two continents and will be comfortable writing in the clear, conversational style of newsletters. We are looking for a journalist with the creativity, judgment and confidence to explain the world's biggest stories to our readers, often with help from other Times journalists. The lead items in this newsletter may sometimes appear in The Morning, as well as on the Times homepage and in print. The job is the modern incarnation of a newsroom columnist, requiring analytical chops and a strong writing voice.

To apply for the job, please submit a memo explaining your vision in one or two pages, along with a list of 10 ideas (a few sentences each) for lead items you would want to write in the coming months. They should include at least one idea each related to the Israel-Hamas and Russia-Ukraine wars, and the global competition between the U.S and China.

Location: New York is preferred, but candidates in DC or London will also be considered.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum 5 years of reporting experience.
  • Experience working with reporters and collaborating with editors.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Extensive professional reporting and/or editing experience, with a notable portfolio in international affairs.
  • Proven leadership skills in a managerial role.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to a fast-paced news environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $150,000.00 and $200,000.00.

The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve. Our journalism and the products we build in the service of that journalism greatly benefit from a range of perspectives, which can only come from diversity of all types, across our ranks, at all levels of the organization. Achieving true diversity and inclusion is the right thing to do. It is also the smart thing for our business. So we strongly encourage women, veterans, people with disabilities, people of color and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.

All applications will receive consideration for employment without regard to legally protected characteristics.
