The Town of Falmouth is seeking an enthusiastic and creative professional to serve as our Managing Librarian of Branch Services and lead this division of the Falmouth Public Library (FPL). The Managing Librarian of Branch Services is a senior-level, highly responsible position that manages the operations and dedicated staff of the East Falmouth and North Falmouth Branches of FPL. This is a full-time position that works 37.5 hours per week, including some Saturday and evening hours, with some schedule flexibility.

Under the administrative direction of the Library Director, the Managing Librarian of Branch Services is responsible for the management and operation of the East Falmouth and North Falmouth branches of the FPL. Essential functions include, but are not limited to training, scheduling, and evaluating a staff of four regular part-time employees; short and long-term planning; development and implementation of a wide range of programming; and the development of the branch library collections.

The ideal candidate is creative, energetic, and flexible with a welcoming demeanor and a desire to foster an inclusive space. The successful applicant also has excellent communication, organizational, leadership, and customer service skills. This position requires a self-starter who can work independently with a high level of discretion; however, this position is part of the FPL Managing Librarian team that meets weekly with the Library Director and Assistant Director for support and collaborative decision-making regarding Library-wide goals, initiatives, and operations.

The Falmouth Public Library is a well-supported and well-loved, busy library that is frequented by the residents of Falmouth and the surrounding towns as well as by our share of the tens of thousands of summer visitors to Falmouth. The Main Library, located in the heart of downtown Falmouth, and the East and North branches are a highly valued community resource and are well supported by the elected Board of Trustees, Town Administration, the Falmouth Public Library Support Fund, and the Friends of the Falmouth Public Library.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association-accredited graduate school and five (5) years of public library experience, including supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

The successful candidate has intensive knowledge of the principles and practices of library work and supports the Library’s role in providing free and equal access to ideas, information, resources, and services. The ideal applicant has strong communication and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to foster a staff culture of mutual respect and support. Applicants must also have the ability to effectively work and interact with individuals and groups of various abilities, cultures, backgrounds, and identities.

Expected Starting Range: Step 1 ($34.26/hour) – Step 3 ($37.06/hour), commensurate with qualifications and experience, with room to advance along the seven-step pay scale. Comprehensive benefits package, including 13 paid holidays per year; vacation/sick/personal paid time off; Town contribution of up to 75% of the cost of health insurance; cost-effective dental, vision, life insurance, and disability policy plans; enrollment in the defined benefit pension plan; modest tuition reimbursement; voluntary pre-tax and Roth 457(b) plans; and professional development opportunities.

Preference Date to Apply: Tuesday, November 12, 2024 by 4:30 p.m. The position will remain open until filled, but candidates who apply by the above date and time will be given preference over later applications. Candidates are encouraged to upload a cover letter and resume to the online application portal.
