Part-Time Library Assistant

Position Summary The college is seeking a team-oriented professional for the position of
Part-time Library Assistant who will be the primary customer service contact for library patrons.
This position is a hands-on role that requires an understanding of all of the various library functions. The successful applicant will have experience with all aspects of the library, with specific experience with library catalogs, databases, and be adaptable to new technology as it arises. Also, the candidate will be customer-service oriented with a problem-solving mindset. This role will require a significant level of self-direction.
The
Part-time Library Assistant is a 10-month hourly working up to 30 hours per week. Hourly pay rate is $10.00 per hour. This position offers no benefits. The position reports primarily to the Director of Library Services and secondarily to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The
Part-time Library Assistant provides excellent service for the User Services Area (front desk) of the Library and is the primary customer service contact for library patrons. This role is responsible for supervising student workers, circulation, general reference questions, helping patrons with computer- or photocopier-related troubleshooting, technical processing of library materials, and other duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities
1. Perform the duties of the
Part-time Library Assistant while modeling positive behaviors and being maintaining a positive image of ICC.
2. Provide excellent customer service for library patrons.
3. Provide excellent maintenance, supervision and cleaning the User Services Area of the Library.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Oversee the User Services Area, including training and supervision of student workers.
2. Assist patrons with locating materials in the physical collection, as well as in the Librarys electronic resources, such as databases and web guides.
3. Accurately answer general reference questions and direct patrons to appropriate resources.
4. Assist with circulation activities of all library materials.
5. Oversee the accurate technical processing of library materials.
6. Oversee timely and effective interlibrary loan services and maintain important statistics on this area.
7. Accurately assist with periodical receiving and serials record keeping.
8. Assist with the timely acquisition of library materials and related accurate record keeping.
9. Assist with archival duties as assigned.
10. Accurately handle and record monetary transactions as needed.
11. Conduct tours and brief orientations for students and visitors to convey a good understanding of library services, as needed.
12. Accurately perform recording of daily statistics, as necessary.
13. Delete items and records from the library catalog, when required.
14. Assist with annual inventory, as assigned.
15. Ensure the Library is clean, tidy and attractive by performing such duties as shelving materials, watering plants, cleaning furniture, etc., when needed.
16. Adhere to all college procedures.
17. Regularly attend work as assigned.
18. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Candidates applying for this position should possess the following:
Associates degree required; five years experience in library services may be substituted for the Associates degree. Bachelors degree preferred.
Transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable for consideration, but official copies will be required for employment)from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Must be knowledgeable about the library catalog, databases and information literacy skills ("recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information" from the American Library Association).
Must be comfortable using and troubleshooting computers, photocopier/scanners, and other Library technology.
Good computer skills are required; a high level of familiarity with Microsoft Word and Outlook are essential.
Above average time management and interpersonal communications skills.
Must be able to learn to use new technology and computer programs quickly.
Must be able to maintain friendly, courteous and professional behavior towards patrons and college faculty and staff at all times, displaying eagerness to help, flexibility, and a strong positive attitude, while espousing a collaborative work ethic and a philosophy of higher education that is compatible with the mission of Independence Community College.
