Position Description

Assists school administrators in maintaining order and discipline, preventing crime, investigating violations of school board policies, and detaining students violating the law or school board policies on school property or at school-sponsored events. Responsible solely for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the assigned school. Prevents and addresses disruption of the educational process through daily operations including routine patrol, crime prevention, surveillance, investigation, emergency response, recovery of property, and related activities to ensure a safe, secure, and orderly school environment.

Essential Job Functions

The following statements of duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. Specific Responsibilities


  • Receives supervision from the Building Principal and Director of School Security and Registration for enforcement of all school rules.

  • Supervises school grounds and communicates to correct problems.

  • Coordinates with staff to promote physical security measures at school buildings.

  • Manages traffic flow and liaises with the police department if necessary.

  • Protects school property.

  • Maintains visibility within the school building and campus.

  • Discourages loitering and inappropriate behavior; removes intruders or refers them to police.

  • Assists staff as appropriate.

  • Serves as liaison to the Newington Police Department via the School Resource Officer and contacts juvenile and detective divisions as needed.

  • Provides transportation of students to off-campus locations as needed.

  • Assists with investigating illegal attendance cases.

  • Uses computer programs for video surveillance, access control, and identification systems, as well as standard office software.

  • Works to build partnerships across the district to enhance security and serve community needs.

Additional Job Functions


  • Core hours are 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

  • Performs additional tasks as requested.

  • Opportunities for overtime; hours as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Knowledge of basic laws, security measures, first aid, and CPR.

  • Ability to interpret policies, respond to emergencies, communicate effectively, and establish cooperative relationships.

  • Good oral communication, human relations, and interpersonal skills.

Physical and Environmental Requirements


  • Ability to stand for long periods, patrol grounds, and respond to incidents.

  • Sufficient strength to restrain/resist aggressive individuals.

  • Ability to respond immediately to emergencies across the district.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Retired Connecticut certified Police Officer preferred.

  • Combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary skills.

License or Certification

A valid Connecticut drivers license and ability to obtain a Town of Newington Constable certification, which involves a background check.
