Description As the primary professional leading cruise business development within the Maritime Department, the Principal of Maritime Business Retention’s focus is to grow cruise passenger and ship call volumes for the economic benefit of the San Diego region as well as the financial stability of the Port of San Diego. Cruise is the most visible activity on San Diego’s waterfront, showcasing the Port’s mission, strategic goals, and positive impact. In this role, you will be the voice for the San Diego cruise industry to both internal and external stakeholders. You will be the primary representative of the Port with cruise line executives, leading negotiations and addressing challenges to delivering a world class cruise experience. You will model and forecast trends, develop business plans, and work with departments across the Port to implement those plans. To maintain and grow the cruise business, individuals in this position are expected to travel, coordinate, and lead sales calls. You will keep abreast of industry news, attend trade shows and conferences, developing and maintaining a knowledge base of the cruise industry, including its strengths, weaknesses, and challenges, to identify growth opportunities in San Diego. GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general direction, grow Maritime volumes and sales, exceed customer satisfaction, and improve the Port District's profitability and return on investment. Develop sales initiatives to expand the customer base and market share by establishing short and long-term sales strategies that increase maritime sales volume and surpass forecasted sales budgets. Promote awareness of the District's capabilities and benefits, improve market position, deliver customer presentations, attend trade shows, and craft advertising in partnership with the Marketing department. Identify and recommend product or service enhancements to improve customer satisfaction and sales potential. Implement and coordinate business development and marketing programs to increase revenue and optimize facility utilization. Review existing plans, develop industry contacts, and document activities in CRM software. Adhere to policies and perform related duties.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Principal, Maritime Business Development is responsible for developing strategies to manage and increase business development efforts within the District's maritime lines. It requires experience in lead generation, strategic business attraction, and developing relationships with potential clients benefiting from the District's facilities. Supervises sales staff, assists with supply chain solutions, coordinates with various departments, and seeks to upgrade the client mix for long-term revenue growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Generate new business leads and secure customer accounts for the Maritime division. Develop and drive business development efforts to increase revenues and market share. Analyze markets for opportunities and provide technical/logistical solutions. Build and execute account plans that deliver customer awareness and sales. Identify and qualify opportunities aligned with business objectives. Add value to sales and develop solutions to close deals. Develop and manage relationships with key prospects and clients. Work with departments to define value propositions and strategies. Create account-specific presentations and goals. Develop new business through digital platforms and sales support materials. Participate in strategy sessions, set priorities, and track performance. Ensure brand standards and goals are met. Record activities in CRM system. Collaborate with local CEOs, media, and decision-makers on marketing strategies. Support and coach sales staff, and may supervise team members. Travel domestically and internationally as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from a four-year college with a major in business, marketing, or related field and 8 years of management experience in sales or economic development; or high school diploma/GED with at least 10 years of relevant management experience.
