Job Description

Overview

The Building Inspector position in Sacramento County reviews construction plans, inspects residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, as well as other structures, to ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and national codes.

Knowledge and Skills


  • Techniques and methods of inspection
  • Principles and techniques of supervision and training
  • Local, state, and national codes and ordinances applicable in Sacramento County
  • Legal procedures regarding code enforcement in Sacramento County
  • Building construction materials, methods, and practices common to Sacramento County


Abilities
  • Supervise, evaluate, and train others
  • Read and interpret building and construction plans and specifications
  • Maintain effective working relationships with builders, contractors, architects, the general public, employees, and other departments
  • Prepare clear and concise reports


Minimum Qualifications
  • Either: Three years full?time experience as a Building Inspector I or II in Sacramento County service reviewing construction plans and inspecting buildings to determine compliance with local, state, and national codes.
  • Or: Three years full?time experience equivalent to the class of Building Inspector I or II performing similar duties.


Note: Experience means full?time paid experience unless volunteer experience is specifically acceptable. Part?time paid experience may be pro?rated to meet the total experience requirements.

Special Requirements


  • License Required: A valid California Drivers License, Class C or higher, must be obtained prior to appointment.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to climb ladders, rafters, scaffolding; crawl into attics and under buildings; climb into and out of ditches and construction pools; visually trace colored electrical wiring.


Certification Requirements
  • All positions require one year of verifiable experience in the applicable field and within one year thereafter to obtain certification from a recognized state, national, or international association, as determined by the County.
  • County employees previously serving as inspector, plans examiner, or building official for at least two years prior to January 1, 1996 are exempt from certification requirements.
  • Persons must complete at least 45 hours of continuing education every three years.
  • Failure to maintain a valid Drivers License or required certification may constitute cause for termination under Civil Service Rule 11.4.



Probationary Period

Twelve (12) months.
